Projects

In my business communication class, we were given a variety of projects to put what we had learned into practice. Below are a couple of the projects that were done that semester, accompanied by an overview and a short reflection on what I learned from each one. Overall, I became more confident in my professional skills.

Email Writing

In this project, I was tasked with revising and editing an email that could be sent to employees about changing policy. Through this experience, I practiced professional communication and learned the key components of writing emails. I also learned about different message structures and utilized one that fit the project the most.

Data Tracking

Through this project, I tracked the steps I walked each day for the past couple of months. I collected my data through the health app on my phone. I found that my steps varied wildly, and when looking at it from a general day-to-day basis, it was hard to find a meaningful pattern. I decided to look at the data on a weekly basis to see if there was any correlation between the steps I walked vs the day of the week. The results were revealing. I noticed that my steps were the lowest on Friday-Sunday. In the middle of the week, my steps were the highest. This corresponds with my weekly schedule as I stay home Friday through Sunday, and during the week, I spend my day walking around campus.

Team Presentation

In this group project, my team was assigned to create a presentation on the effects of nonverbal communication in a professional setting. We had to conduct research on our topic, create a PowerPoint, and prepare what we would say to our class on presentation day. My teammates and I met together at an initial meeting to divide the research up. We worked on our research independently, but when it came to creating our presentation, we would work together to ensure its cohesiveness. In the days leading up to our presentation, we would run through it until we were comfortable with the material and sucessfully presented the material in a confident and comprehensible manner.

Reflection

When I did the various projects, my class had workshop days during which we could provide feedback and receive feedback from our peers. I saw how my peers applied their knowledge, and I also received helpful insight into improving my work. For example, In the email activity, my classmate helped me ensure that my email response included all the information it required.
